“Out of clutter, find simplicity.”  ― Albert Einstein

Have you ever wished you had Harmony in the home? Creating a harmonious home environment is like putting the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle together. You can visualize the finished picture but how do you get there in design? The human brain likes a harmonious look because it is well organized and visually appealing. Without harmony, you will experience a confusing and disorganized presence. Harmony is achieved through the delicate balance of variety and unity.

The principle of Unity refers to the sense that all the pieces belong together. All the right pieces are blended in one room as one theme.  If all things agree with each other, they will produce a pleasing effect. You can achieve Unity through applying repetition by incorporating the same or similar looking objects by weight or color.  Variety, on the other hand, adds interest to the overall picture. Variety can be in the form of different colors, textures, furniture, or accessories. To add interest, try adding an old detail to a more modern look. That is often referred to as an “element of surprise.” By placing a piece in the room that is uncommon or different from your central theme, it will create uniqueness in the room’s décor.

When you have achieved the right proportions of unity with an element of surprise, step back and look at the room and ask yourself these questions. Is the room visually pleasing with a feel of contentment? Do all the pieces get along together as a whole? Have you added the element of surprise?

If you have managed to bring it all together using these common design principles, then you have successfully created Harmony in the Home.
